The Wine Box Sangiovese di Romagna offers an in-depth look at one of the most important denominations of the territory, shining brightly thanks to talented interpreters. The Sangiovese di Romagna denomination was a standalone DOC until 2011, when it was merged into the broader DOC Romagna along with four other denominations in the area, in order to avoid excessive fragmentation and promote the enhancement of the area. Locally called “Sanzves”, according to some theories the name Sangiovese derives from the Latin expression “sanguis Jovis”, meaning “blood of Jupiter”, as on Monte Giove, located near the town of Santarcangelo di Romagna, there was a monastery where a red wine called “blood of Monte Giove” was produced.

In the Wine Box Sangiovese di Romagna, six bottles of different Romagna Sangiovese selected by the sommeliers of Callmewine are kept to create a selection that highlights the different expressions of this DOC established back in 1967. The Denominazione di Origine Controllata Romagna Sangiovese, also represented by the Superiore and Riserva types, requires a minimum presence of 85% Sangiovese grapes and is produced in as many as 16 different subzones, such as Modigliana, Predappio, and Cesena to name a few of the most renowned. This remarkable territorial heterogeneity, combined with the presence of multiple Sangiovese clones, is the basis for the significant differences found between one wine and another.
